The 50th Tokyo Koenji Awaodori Festival

After my previous nights excursions I wasn’t feeling so great when I woke up in the afternoon but as someone who is restless I decided to meet up with my friend Asif (plus two of his mates) and go to a festival in Koenji.

I knew little about it at the time and was kind of thinking it would be just another quite small scale Japanese festival but little did I know that over a million people would be there lining the station’s surrounding streets to watch the thousands of dancers dancing in their teams in costume along with music and rhythm.

While I can appreciate the effort of the performers and the colourfulness and atmosphere of the thing I did find it far too crowded and we seemed to just spend our whole time walking around looking for a decent spot or trying to find each other again. The almost constant drizzle didn’t help either but any place where you can freely drink alcohol on the streets is fine by me. Sadly I haven’t really got any photos which can help portray this event a little better than my poor description as its a little difficult to capture images which are constantly moving.
