Usually these complete travel posts comprise activities and sights done and seen over a few days but this one to Chiba at the start of last year was just one exhaustingly long day trip. It spawned a fair few posts so here is the compilation of all of them. I would not recommend trying to replicate this in any way!
The journey to Chiba station, and then onto Choshi was uneventful but from there I got to ride on the quaintest rural line in the Greater Tokyo area; the wonderful Chōshi Electric Railway Line. I went to the end of the line where a very unique fish shrine is located a short walk from Tokawa station. More details here
After that I then visited all ten station on the Chōshi Electric Railway Line which is just 6.4 kilometres in length. Some of the station buildings have great European influence in their designs but are quite run-down now. They have a rustic charm to them and the old station signage is interesting to see. More details here
There were a couple of other stops along the way such as Inubosaki Lighthouse and Chōshi Port Tower. More details here
Sawara station is about 50 minutes north-west of Chōshi and provided three things of interest. The station itself has a Platform 0 which is one of my very niche interests. More details here
Wanpaku Park is just a short walk north of the station and it’s Sphinx playground structure is a slightly bizarre sight. More details here
The city of Sawara itself is more famed for its river cruises which are incredibly popular during the cherry blossom season. More details here
Just over an hour south-west of Sawara is Chiba station which is one of those stations I’ve passed through a few times but never actually got out at. There are just seven upside-down train lines in the world and Japan happens to have two of them. One is in the Shonan area of Kanagawa Prefecture and the other is the Chiba Urban Monorail which is the world’s longest suspended railway. More details here
Even though I really wanted to get back home there was one final place to visit and it involved a slight detour back to Yotsukaido station just to see another Platform 0. This was the first place I ever saw such a phenomenon way back in 2011 and it was time to actually capture a photo or two this time! More details here
After 12 hours in Chiba Prefecture (not including the travel there) it was time to finally head home for some rest. The original plan wasn’t to do all of the above but whilst in the area I decided to push myself and see all the things I had earmarked on Google Maps. It sure was tiring but good to see and do it all in one go.
