3 Home Matches In 11 Days On My Big Return To Leicester Deliver Mixed Results!

As soon as the idea of returning to the UK for the festive season became apparent, I was looking closely at the fixture list to see which games Leicester City had and how many I’d realistically be able to attend assuming I could get tickets. Thankfully, with the club now in the second tier of English football it made it much easier than during my previous visits to Britain where I was only able to attend home ties in the FA Cup 3rd Round where demand for tickets was less than usual. This time I was quite surprised to be in town for three home matches but would that initial delight actually turn out to be as satisfying as I’d hoped it would?

#1. Leicester City vs. Watford, Friday 26th December 2025 (KO 15:00)

Not long after acquiring a ticket for this one I realised that there was absolutely no public transport on Boxing Day so really thought I might not be able to go. Luckily, my parents had some lovely friends who very kindly stepped in to save the day. As much as it was nice to finally see the wonderful statue of our beloved late Chairman for the first time, I didn’t feel quite so nostalgic and excited as on previous occasions as we made our way to Filbert Way.

After a long absence, I couldn’t resist popping into the club shop known as the foxes fanstore, and though I enjoyed looking round, I didn’t get too close to actually purchasing anything.

A lot of the retro stuff interests me but back home I had plenty of original old merchandise waiting for me. For this match, I wore a mid-90s shirt and an 80s scarf.

I probably took too long in the shop and taking some pictures outside as due to the queue to get inside I only just managed to get in my seat as the teams took to the field.

Watford started the far better team which surprised me but against the run of play Leicester took the lead and really should have gone 2-0 up but Watford levelled just before the break.

As soon as Watford took the lead on 65 minutes, Leicester never looked like getting anything and failed to create anything at all. My long-awaited return hadn’t gone the way I had hoped and was ultimately very disappointing but there wasn’t too much time for sadness as I’d be back just three days later!

Final Score: Leicester City 1-2 Watford

#2. Leicester City vs. Derby County, Monday 29th December 2025 (KO 19:45)

Back in the 90s, this East Midlands Derby was always the one I looked the most forward to. Times have changed a bit though and I failed to get too hyped about this encounter. Personally, what was really nice was meeting up with a couple of old school friends who I hadn’t seen in years and together we walked to the stadium as that was the most time-effective way of catching up a bit.

Under the lights, the pre-kick off fire show was rather spectacular as Kasabian’s ‘Club Foot‘ belted out of the sound system.

The start of the match followed the pattern of the previous one with Leicester taking an early lead before Derby hit back just a few minutes later.

The second half wasn’t pretty but Leicester held on for a much-needed win.

Final Score: Leicester City 2-1 Derby County

#3. Leicester City vs. West Bromwich Albion, Monday 5th January 2026 (KO 20:00)

For my final match of this trip, I was at the stadium over two hours before kick off as the restaurant between the town centre and Filbert Way which I had planned to go to was closed.

Subsequently, my dinner ended up being battered sausage and chips from a food truck outside the stadium at a cost far greater than I’d ever paid for such a thing.

Still, the food trucks were probably a little cheaper than inside. Indeed, I killed a lot of time in the concourse as it was less cold than my seat.

My vantage point was slightly different for this match on a blisteringly cold night as I was in the Spion Kop 4 (SK4) section.

There was something of a boycott for this match (in protest at the way the club has been run in recent tjnes but who knows if people were really absent for that reason or just because it was so cold, or the fact that it had been selected for live TV coverage on the first day back at work!

I didn’t realise it until a few days later but the last time I saw these two teams competing against each other was in Hong Kong in 2017 when both clubs were Premier League teams. How times have changed!

Yet again, Leicester took an early lead but were pegged back before the break and our heads dropped.

West Brom were much the better team in the second half and had it not been for a string of great saves from keeper Stolarczyk they would have deservedly got the three points. Of course you don’t always get what you deserve in football, and unbelievably Leicester snatched it right at the death as some neat inter-passing play led to a wonderful winner on the volley by Abdul Fatawu.

It was an undeserved victory to be honest and mentally I had accepted that a point might be as much as we’d get. Even now, I kind of struggle to realise that we actually won this match!

Final Score: Leicester City 2-1 West Bromwich Albion

Overall, the three performances I saw really weren’t great at all and sadly the atmosphere was rather poor. However, there were brief flashes of nice play and I guess two wins out of three ain’t too bad!
