Modern Architecture Outside of Tokyo #6 – Nagoya

For over a decade Tokyo Fox has focused on the modern architecture of Tokyo with a long-running ten part series featuring over 100 interesting-looking buildings. During that time I have also taken photos of some unique structures outside of the capital city but had no place to showcase them until now. This is Volume 6 which includes some weird and wonderful buildings in the city of Nagoya.

5. Nagoya Port Building @ 1-9 Minatomachi, Minato-ku – Located about five minutes on foot from Nagoya-ko Station on the Maebashi Subway Line, this property cost 3.4 billion yen to complete. It is just over 50 metres tall with an observation deck overlooking the industrial complex.

4. Oasis 21 @ 1-11-1 Higashisakura, Higashi-ku – The roof of this huge glass oval structure is 100 metres in length with a circumference of 200 metres, and it’s filled with water to create an interesting visual effect that helps cool down the temperature of the shopping area beneath in the hot and humid Japanese summers. This huge building has  been open to the public since 2002 and is surrounded by a very pleasant promenade.

3. Nagoya City Science Museum @ 2-17-1 Sakae, Naka-ku – From distance, it really does look like a huge cannonball rolling down the street. It certainly reminded me of Fuji TV’s big ball in Odaiba (Tokyo) but this one is actually a massive planetarium with an inner diameter of 35 metres. It is located in Shirakawa Park.

2. Higashiyama Sky Tower @ Kameiri 1-8 Tashirocho, Chikusa-ku – This seven-storey construction looks like a rocket that’s about to be launched. At 130 metres in height it really does tower over the zoo beneath whilst offering beautiful 360 degree views of the city. It also serves as a radio tower in disaster prevention situations.

1. Mode Gakuen Spiral Towers @ 4-27-1 Meieki, Nakamura-ku – A spiral twisting glass tower that was (mostly) completed in February 2008. It’s 170 metres in height and stands tall a short distance from Nagoya station. This corkscrew design building houses a school of fashion and other colleges.
