The Hidden Fortress On The Coast Of Osaka

When I saw this building on the cover of a Japanese magazine last Summer I assumed it was some abandoned building off the coast of Japan somewhere. I just thought it looked so cool in its appearance but I had no idea what it was, or where it was exactly but when I did find out I was quite surprised.

This offshore structure’s appearance is reminiscent of a maritime base due to its location but it has no military connection. It is in fact known as Osaka Prefectural Youth Marine Center and it’s very much open for business. Every day in fact!

In the early hours of the morning I left Wakayama Prefecture behind after taking the Nankai Line train from Wakayamashi to Tan-Nowa which is located at the southwestern tip of Osaka Prefecture. From there it was a 15 minute walk to the chocolate brown coloured building which was shining in the sun amidst the blue of the sea and the sky.

The facility is nearly 50 years old and was designed by architects Takanobu Ota and Yuji Matsubayashi.

Sadly I was unable to take a look inside as it can only be entered by making a reservation. What I have since found out is that it is a marine experience and learning facility where you can enjoy various water sport activities such as fishing, canoeing, sea kayaking and yachting. Not only that but camping, raft making and other outdoor activities are available for kids to partake in.

It looks like it would be a pretty interesting place to spend a night, and indeed there are accommodation facilities including bunk beds, sports courts, self catering facilities for families and children or students.

The only other information I could find out about this place is that it has become something of a popular shooting area for cosplayers! Sadly I hadn’t packed one of my Star Wars outfits though!!
