For over a decade Tokyo Fox has focused on the modern architecture of Tokyo with a long-running ten part series featuring over 100 interesting-looking buildings. During that time I have also taken photos of some unique structures outside of the capital city but had no place to showcase them until now. This is Volume 4 which includes some weird and wonderful buildings in Kanagawa and Yamanashi.
5. Kawaramachi High Rise Housing Project Building No. 3, Kawasaki, Kanagawa – This building was designed by Sachio Otani and completed in 1972 with it’s design intended as an alternative to the usual alternative block. The lower half of the building is splayed resulting in a public space underneath which has seemingly never really been utilised fully and has ended up just being an area where the residents park their bicycles or the kids play ball games. More details here
4. Yokohama University of Pharmacy, 601 Matanacho, Totsuka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa – The former Hotel Empire is about 70 metres tall and was actually one of the first high-rise buildings in all of Japan. It opened in 1965 and is a 22-storey building with a roof like Buddhist architecture that dwarves all other buildings in the area. More details here
3. Kanjoin Temple @ 2-8-7 Okurayama, Kohoku-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa – The eye catching adjoining car park and reception hall was designed by Kengo Kuma, and has only been around since last year.
2. Shonandai Cultural Center Children’s Museum, Shonandai 1-8, Fujisawa, Kanagawa – The name of the building pretty much tells you all you need to know. It was built between 1986 and 1990 and was designed by Itsuko Hasegawa.
1. Yamanashi Bunka-Kaika (Culture Hall), Kōfu, Yamanashi – Reminiscent of a fortress, this building was designed by Kenzo Tange as well as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and it is used as a concert hall or broadcast centre. More details here
