Not long after compiling last years top 10 list of must-see dinosaur-related places in Japan I then found out about another park in Tokyo with some dinosaurs in it. Not only that but it was just a short distance from the temple guarded by a pre-historic creature. That’s always the way I guess, and when I’ve found another nine places I’ll make a second compilation post including this one!
These dinosaurs are part of a children’s traffic park located just two kilometres away from the aforementioned Shoganji Temple They’re both in Katsushika Ward, and in need of something to do back on a very hot and humid day in August, I decided to cycle along the Arakawa River for 80 minutes from the Tokyo Fox Global Operations Centre in Itabashi-ku. Of course I then had to cycle back too!
Just a few months before this cycle ride I had been so close to these dinosaurs when I went to Okudo Sports Center Park to see the non-league football team inspired by Captain Tsubasa team play. Foolishly I didn’t give myself enough time to see them then so another trip out to this part of eastern Tokyo was necessary.
Beforehand I thought the nets on the dinosaurs were to allow kids to climb up on the pre-historic creatures but that was rather foolish of me I guess as such a thing would be considered too dangerous for such a risk-averse country. Instead, the nets are there to keep the kids off which I believe was a result of the pandemic a few years ago.
A Tyrannosaurus Rex standing up on it’s hind legs amidst the trees is one of the dinosaur exhibits of sorts.
As the title of this post suggests, the heavily armoured and large horned herbivore Triceratops is the other statue in the park. This one was fenced off with yet more signs warning about the dangers of climbing on them.
Whilst the dinosaurs in this park are no match for the ones at Kodomo-no-Mori Park in Shinagawa, it is a better park to take children too due to its main use as a traffic park where they can ride go-karts and practice riding on a variety of bicycles. Not only that but there is a sizeable modern playground, a sandpit, a lawn area and a pond to play in during the summer months.
- Kitanuma Kōtsū Park is located at 8-17-1 Okudo, Katsushika-ku, Tokyo.
