When a new film or TV series is on the horizon there is often all manner of goods emblazoned with the logo of the production being promoted. That certainly wasn’t the case this time with the global Coca Cola Star Wars campaign which ran through some of the Summer and Autumn months without any particular promo attached to it.
It may have even been August when I finally saw some cans on sale in my local supermarket. There were regular Coca Cola 350 ml cans with the Mandalorian and Ahsoka Tano on them, and a few days later I came across the 500 ml Obi-Wan and Mandalorian ones.
The Coca Cola Zero ones appeared next with images of Yoda, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Vader and C-3P0 displayed on them. Not only do the can designs feature the facial images but there is also a scene from the movies too. They are blended together to make for a very cool looking can design.
The last two that I was able to get were the 250 ml ones which were only available for purchase from vending machines. To my annoyance, the first three I bought were all of Emperor Palpatine!
There were a couple more cans available only at Tokyo Disney Resort (or online via bulk purchase) so I was unable (unwilling?) to get them. However, thanks to my friend Alan Gibson of JSoccer.com fame, I can now show you the Chewbacca and Han Solo 250 ml zero sugar cans.
The special Coke On vending machines had some kind of offers for collecting stamps and points via the app which could then be exchanged for some rather limited-edition clothing items like Star Wars Coca Cola jackets, sweaters, t-shirts. Other products available were coaster sets and drink tickets.
In the end my total was ten cans in three different sizes with nine characters on them. For the record, all of the cola inside them has been consumed by me! Trust me that keeping old cans of cola is a risky and potentially messy idea!
Although I was only really interested in the cans I did still buy (or get bought by my wife!) some of the 700 ml and 350 ml bottles of various types of Coca Cola.
I was always going to dispose of the bottles themselves but did decide to keep the labels. I didn’t bother with the ones on the 1.5 litre bottles though!
Star Wars probably has a richer association with rival company Pepsi, particularly during the prequel era of 1999 to 2005 when a range of cans, bottle caps and drinks holders were on the market. The four cans I have are all from ‘Revenge of the Sith‘ (2005) and they feature Darth Vader, a stormtrooper, General Grievous and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Also in my possession is a 300 ml Padme Amidala Pepsi Diet Twist screwcap bottle.
The battle droid and R2-D2 can holders from ‘The Phantom Menace‘ (1999) are fairly useless but look quite cool and could be used (dangerously!) to pass a drink across a table as they move once you drag them back a little and then let go.
This C-3P0 bottle cap thing was made for Celebration 2000 and designed to turn a Pepsi bottle (or indeed any other bottle of drink) into a droid. Push a button on the back and it plays the main theme from Star Wars. It’s a fun thing to have collected but it really is quite pointless!
For Star Wars Celebration Japan in 2008 and the 3D release of ‘The Phantom Menace‘ in 2012, the 500 ml Pepsi NEX bottles were normal, but they had a range of different (16 for the former and 12 for the latter) strap accessories in packaging hooked around the cap, with the former being the be@rbrick variety.
I’d completely forgotten about this until it recently appeared in my Facebook memories! Pepsi energy cola drink appeared on the market for a short time in October 2012 with Darth Vader featuring on the front and back of the 250 ml cans.
For Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025 and some pop-up shops this year there have been some vending machines randomly dispensing eight different cans of oolong tea at 800 yen a pop. How it tasted I really don’t know as my wife drank it whilst I was out one evening!
A decade ago, Kirin Mets Cola produced dark side and light side bottles in Japan with 12 different characters on them as part of the promotion for ‘The Force Awakens‘ (2015). Neither tasted particularly nice but the dark side one was a bit better from my memory!
When I first thought about detailing this recent collection of Coca Cola Star Wars cans I felt some other stuff was probably needed to fill the post out a bit. I rummaged through the Tokyo Fox vaults in search of other cola products related to the sci-fi saga. I “can” not believe how much stuff I found!
