It’s ten years since this Ron Howard-directed film adaptation of Dan Brown’s controversial 2003 novel was released to fairly negative reviews from the critics. Personally, I have mixed feelings about this American mystery thriller having reviewed it after watching it on it’s release in May 2006. I went into it cold and without expectation as I hadn’t read the book.

Filming took place in France, Malta and Scotland as well as in a handful of English counties including Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex and London too. First up is the French police station on 50 minutes; the interior of which was filmed on the first floor of the Farmiloe Building (below) on St John Street in Smithfield. This place has been used in a fair few films such as the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy where it was Gotham City Police Station, and the director also used the place in ‘Inception‘ (2010) as the pharmacy.

The circular designed Temple Church (below) on Inner Temple Lane is seen on 114 minutes and is where Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and ‘Amélie‘ (2001) actress Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou) look for clues. The nearest tube station is Temple Underground Station on the Circle and District lines and the church is a five minute walk from there.

Robert and Sophie flee from Temple Church and go on the run along Fleet Street (below) in Holborn on 118 minutes.

The London landmark that is Tower Bridge (below) is seen on 120 minutes as Remy (Jean-Yves Berteloot) and Silas (Paul Bettany) drive in the car over it.

On 122 minutes, Remy is betrayed in Orchard Place at East India Dock which is across from the O2 Arena (below) formerly known as the Millennium Dome. The most famous film to have featured this arena is the 007 film ‘The World Is Not Enough‘ (1999).

Looking for the tomb of Sir Isaac Newton, Robert and Sophie go to Westminster Abbey (below) on 124 minutes. It is seen later again on 142 minutes. The interior scenes though were shot at Lincoln Cathedral.

Silas holes up in the Opus Dei safe house, seen on 128 minutes, at Gloucester Terrace (below) in Paddington.

Bonus: Burghley House stately home mostly provides the interior of ‘Castel Gandolfo’ as well as Saunière’s retreat in the flashback scenes. In ‘Pride & Prejudice‘ (2005) it was used as “Rosings”; the palatial home of Lady Catherine de Bourg played by Dame Judi Dench. It also featured in the BBC TV adaptation of ‘Middlemarch‘ (1994). England’s greatest Elizabethan house is a hefty £12.70 to get into but its free to wander the vast area outside which is exactly what we did when my parents took us there in August 2013.

The exterior scenes are of Belvoir Castle in my home county of Leicestershire as shown in the first screenshot below. Those who know the castle might have a double-take when seeing the Duke and Duchess of Rutland’s home on 47 minutes as a fair bit of CGI was used. In the second screenshot below is the exterior of Burghley House (with CGI) which is seen briefly on 113 minutes.

The Louvre (below) in Paris, the worlds most visited museum, is where Langdon’s presence is requested in order to help solve the riddle of Jacques Saunière’s death. IM Pei’s landmark glass Pyramid has been in the foreground of the museum since 1988 and appears on screen in the first ten minutes of this epic movie. Langdon calls it magnificent but detective Bezu Fache (Jean Reno) calls it “a scar on the face of Paris.” It is seen again around the 39 minute mark and then again at the climax of the movie on 164 minutes.

The Mona Lisa painting (below) appears on 28 minutes and was one that surprised me when I visited the museum in December 2008. Like many I guess, I just assumed this most famous of paintings would be a lot bigger.
