Australia Filming Locations #10 – The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

This funny feel-good movie sees a transexual and two drag queens go on a road trip across Australia in a silver-painted bus full of sequinned costumes, glitter, shoes and 70’s pop tunes. Bernadette/Ralph (Terence Stamp), Mitzi/Tick (Hugo Weaving), and Felicia/Adam (Guy Pearce) decide to take their drag performance to Alice Springs for a two-week paid gig.

The first location of prominence is The Imperial Erskineville Hotel (below) which appears on 10 minutes as the trio are given a royal send-off as they embark on their journey having purchased a school bus which they christened “Priscilla.”

The iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House (below) appear seconds later as they leave the big city behind for their adventure to the red centre via Broken Hill (New South Wales) and Coober Pedy (South Australia).

Think of the name Lassiter’s and ‘Neighbours‘ probably comes to mind for many people. The slightly differently spelt Lasseters Hotel Casino (below) is in Alice Springs though (not Erinsbrough!!) and can be seen on 73 and 84 minutes respectively. I took a long walk here back in 2012 and was without any kind of screenshot then so was unable to get exact match-ups. This was the place where the trio of drag queens put on a performance at.

The dream comes true for the guys on 88 minutes when they get to climb Kings Canyon (below) as queens in full-length Gaultier sequins, heels and tiaras. This wonderful canyon is in the Watarrka National Park a few hundred kilometres west of Alice Springs.

At the very end of the closing credits sequence (98 minutes) there is the briefest of clips from the Chinese Garden of Friendship (below) in Sydney. These gardens are in the Darling Harbour area and went on to feature more prominently in ‘The Wolverine‘ (2013) when it doubled up as a Tokyo temple.
