Retrospective Alphabet Dating In Greater Tokyo S00E05: S-V

Whilst season two of alphabet dating is taking place I thought I could fill that void with a restrospecive series which is certainly an easier operation as they were not done in alphabetical order which can be a little stressful and frustrating at times.

Season 0 will throw back to places and things we’ve done in Greater Tokyo since 2011. I generally hate the term “date night” for people who are married or have been together a long time but I guess it is apt for some of the things we did in this series as it will include some things which actually were proper dates back in the early years when we got together.

S is for School Dinner Restaurant (November 2016)

A unique way of dining out and this allows people to experience what Japanese school lunches were like back in the day. This restaurant had a set consisting of soup, meat sauce, curry stew, salad, agepan, softmen noodles and kujira (whale). The latter was once a staple of school lunches as it was more available and cheaper than other meats but it’s rarely eaten today as other fish and meats are much lower in price. More details here

T is for Tachikawa (April 2014)

Cheap Swedish lunch and a look around IKEA was followed by the short trip over the road to the wonderfully vast and spacious Showa Kinen Park on a beautiful sunny Spring day when so many flowers were in bloom. Presumably, we also went shopping in Tachikawa itself after that on our return to the station but I can’t remember exactly!

U is for Ueno Zoo (October 2016)

When we had the Grutto Pass we were unable to enter 50+ museums, gardens and zoos for free or a discounted price. One such place was Tokyo’s most famous zoo so we went there at opening time one Sunday morning! That was a mistake as it was so crowded then! However, turn up half an hour later or so and you can just walk straight in!

V is for Vietnamese Cuisine (November 2012)

Very few options for the letter V so inevitably it is the cuisine of Vietnam which is used….again! This was one of the first international restaurants we went to when we started frequenting such places back in Autumn 2012. ‘Miss Saigon’ in Shibuya (which I believe is still around ten years on from our visit!) was our restaurant of choice on the way back from climbing Mount Takao.
