Alphabet Dating In Japan With My Wife Who Really Was Still Completely Unaware Of The Task At Hand! (S03E03: K-O)

Seasons one and two (as well as the prequel season zero) of alphabet dating certainly pushed the boundaries of what a “date” is, and that continues in season three with even more tenuous examples for each letter of the alphabet. For the record, doing something together (no matter what it is!) counts as a date in this series which is not always about visiting glamorous places and doing exciting things but just getting out there and exploring locations we wouldn’t normally go to. Without further ado, lets kick off the final season of alphabet dating with what we did for the third set of letters…

K is for Katsuya (March 2023)

A relatively easy letter to tick off as we just went to this local chain restaurant one night as neither of us wanted to cook. Sauce Katsudon was a weekly staple for me in my early years in Japan but something that I rarely eat these days so it was a little nostalgic for me.

L is for Koshigaya-Laketown (March 2023)

We were just watching Japanese TV one day when we saw this place briefly featured. I had never heard of it but was keen to check it out so we went there one Sunday morning to take a walk round the sizable lake and onto the outlet malls for some shopping and lunch.

M is for Movie Night (March 2023)

My wife and I actually don’t get to watch too many films together these days due to our working hours but we did have a movie night with snacks. I didn’t take a photo though so you’ll just have to imagine two people sitting on a sofa watching the long awaited sequel to the 1986 original.

N is for Nagasaki Chanpon (March 2023)

To be honest, I was finding it difficult to do an N date but then one day I met my wife by chance on the train as I was heading home from work and she suggested going for chanpon. The lightbulb went off in my head and, after confirming it was indeed Nagasaki chanpon, I jumped at the chance. We went to Jigemon in Naka Itabashi and had two different varieties of this regional noodle dish. I had the kuro (black) one and she had the shiro (white) one which maybe says something about our personalities!

O is for Oasis Night and Oyama (April 2023)

A double-dose of action for the letter O which started on a Saturday evening with Oasis night which basically just entailed watching the live Knebworth concert on DVD. I was at this mammoth musical event (along with 125,000 others on the first day) back in 1996 but had never seen it until this moment. My wife is an Oasis fan but was not aware of this pivotal moment in British rock music.

The following afternoon we went to Happy Road in Oyama which is a really nice local shopping arcade with some great little shops and restaurants.
