So 2024 has only just begun and already Tokyo Fox is looking back!! For just over a decade now there have been exactly ten new posts on here each and every month and these are the twenty from 2023 which got the most hits … excluding sponsored or compilation posts! Of course those entries from earlier in the year had more time to accumulate hits so don’t read too much into it all as it’s basically just another filler post to kick start the new year!
20. This Family-Owned Milk Carton Building Is Udderly Brilliant. More details here
19. This Unique Fish Shrine Is A Great Plaice To Visit. More details here
18. Visiting Every Station On The Quaintest Rural Line In The Greater Tokyo Area. More details here
17. The Other Hugely Popular Thing To Do At Miyajimaguchi Station! More details here
16. Reflecting On 15 Years Since Star Wars Celebration Japan & Looking Ahead To The Next One In 2025! More details here
15. Stations By The Sea In Niigata (1/2). More details here
14. Manic Street Preachers & Suede Roll Back The Years With Co-Headline Dates In Tokyo. More details here
13. Stations By The Sea In Niigata (2/2). More details here
12. 8 Days In Hiroshima: A Milk Carton Building, A Star Wars Cafe, Abandoned Stations, Snowy Hot Springs, Japan’s Best Value Meal, Train Trips, Waterfalls, Boat Race, Family Time & More! More details here
11. This Piglet Cafe in Tokyo Makes You Squeal With Joy! More details here
10. Unstaffed Stations Of Japan #12 – Kamakurakōkōmae – Why this station on the Enoden Line is unstaffed I don’t know. It’s used by over 4000 passengers daily and is one of the one of the busiest on the line. Why it has made the top 10 list here can only be down to the sizable number of Japanese train enthusiasts. More details here
9. Celebrate The Year Of The Rabbit By Visiting This Shrine Just North of Tokyo Which Is Devoted To Those Fluffy Bunnies – 2023 was the year of the rabbit according to the Chinese Zodiac and this site was all too keen to take advantage of the extra attention in rabbit-related things. More details here
8. Tokyo Modern Architecture #10 – It’s one of the site’s longest running series but with very few other examples of modern architecture in the bank, this tenth post in the series will be the last for quite a while I think. Usually it’s a law of diminishing returns for most series’ but this one has steadily grown. More details here
7. This Tunnel Of Light Is The Picture Perfect Place For The Instagram Generation! – One can not usually anticipate how the majotrity of posts will really fare. The top ten is always a bit of a surprise for me (I rarely ever check the stats) but this mix of nature and art in Niigata Prefecture was maybe one that I’d hoped to be slightly successful. More details here
6. Review: Films Set In Japan – People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan (2021) – I did actually see this film shortly after its release back in 2021 and began the review after that but I just never got round to completing it and indeed had to rewatch it again a year later. The review still never materialised and so I had to rewatch it yet again to push the review over the finish line! Who the hell read this review of a film based on a niche UK TV show?!! More details here
5. Review: Films Set In Japan – John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) – This film was released in Japan nearly six months after the rest of the world, and a friend did message me to say it was one of the first to appear when he googled about it. Such is the way these things work, I doubt if it’s still that high up on the Google search! More details here
4. Watching Volleyball In Japan Has To Be One Of The Country’s Noisiest Experience – Perhaps the most surprising entry in this list as sports posts generally do not rate so well compared to other content. I think it featured on the social media pages for one of the teams involved in this match. More details here
3. Feel The Force At This Hidden Pop Culture Cafe In Hiroshima – I came across this place purely by chance and what a find it was. I really could not believe this place was so close to my in-law’s apartment without me even knowing about it. This cosy little pop culture cafe is a great place to go and the owner is a delightful, friendly and very welcoming lady who promoted this post on her socials which always helps get some extra attention. More details here
2. The Forgotten Suspended Railway In Japan Which Will Soon Be No More! – The recent closure of this line due to profitability concerns saw a renewed interest in this post! It was the third dangletrain in Japan depending on whether you considered it worthy of inclusion or not. Personally I think it’s more of an automated people mover (APM) used in places like airports or theme parks not that I let that thought get in the way of promoting it as “the other suspended railway” in Japan! More details here
1. This Star Wars Galaxy Is Not So Far, Far Away As It’s Just In Tokyo (But For A Limited Time!) – What’s surprising is I didn’t even visit this pop-up shop in Ginza for a week after it opened. Usually you have to get in quickly on such things but this store, which was open for a month in total, did fly slightly under the radar regarding promotion of it in advance. More details here
